American Scientists believe in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices may help reduce long-term complications in type 1 diabetes.
According to a study presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), CGM improves blood sugar control by reducing the patient’s HbA1c levels without placing him at any increased risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
The multi-centre study showed that CGM allows better management of diseases especially among diabetics aged over 25.
A study revealed that the device does not provide young people with a significant improvement in HbA1c. The rate, however, fell in all individuals surveyed who used the device at least six days a week.
Researchers at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation concluded that continuous glucose monitors can significantly improve control of blood sugar when used regularly.
Previous studies have suggested that tight blood sugar control reduces the risk of long-term complications such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease and amputation.
